Augur Buzzard

Accipitridae: Buteo augur augur (aka Buteo rufofuscus augur, as a subspecies of the Jackal Buzzard)

The Augur Buzzard is about 55cm long. It hovers in search of small mammals, but will also hunt small ground birds, snakes and lizards. This specimen was seen at the northeastern edge of the Maasai Mara.

The red tail can be seen in this picture of the bird in flight. This is the 'rufofuscus' of its alternate name.
