Bateleur

Accipitridae: Terathopius ecaudatus

The Bateleur is an unusual eagle with a red face and legs, and an exceptionally short tail. It is otherwise black with white underwings. It ranges from 55cm to 70cm. It hunts mainly birds such as pigeon and sandgrouse. The name comes from the French for 'tightrope walker', because when it flies, it tips from side to side, as if searching for balance.

We saw this bird in flight on several occasions, particularly in the Maasai Mara, but never saw it at rest.
