Diederik Cuckoo Juvenile

Cuculidae: Chrysococcyx caprius

This bird, seen at the entrance to Nakuru National Park, was difficult to identify, despite its distinctive appearance. It is, however, a young cuckoo. The Diederick Cuckoo is usually greenish, and the adult is green and white, but this rufous juvenile form also exists. It is about 20cm in height, and eats insects and caterpillars. This cuckoo parasitises weaver birds, especially the Village Weaver.

The name is also spelled 'Dideric' and 'Didric'.
