Doves 1/2

Columbidae: Streptopelia semitorquata (Red-eyed Dove)

Columbidae: Streptopelia decipiens (Mourning Dove)

There are nineteen species of dove in Kenya. It is easy to ignore the differences between dove and pigeon species, because we are so used to the domestic pigeon around our houses. We saw four pigeon species in Kenya, all of which are common.

The Red-eyed Dove (40cm) has red eyes and a neck ring. The pale forehead is distinctive.

The African Mourning Dove (28cm) has yellow eyes, surrounded by an orange ring. It also has a neck ring.
