Egyptian Goose

Anatidae: Alopochen aegyptiacus (Egyptian Goose)

Anatidae: Dendrocygna viduata (White-faced Whistling Duck)

Anatidae: Anas erythrorhyncha (Red-billed Teal)

The Egyptian Goose is not a goose, but a Shelduck (a type of bird intermediate between a goose and a duck). It is about 60cm, and was very common where there was water. It eats seeds, leaves and grass.

These pictures show a male, a female and their family out for a walk. We saw ostriches several times in Maasai Mara.

White-faced Whistling Duck

Red-billed Teal

The ducks and teal were seen in Amboseli. The Red-billed Teal, about 38cm, is a dabbling duck, which doesn't dive, but upends itself at the water surface and feeds on water plants. The White-faced Whistling Duck, about 48cm, feeds on seeds and plants outside and in  the water.
