Herons and Egrets
Ardeidae:
Ardea Cinerea (Grey)
Ardea Goliath (Goliath)
Ardeola Ralloides (Squacco)
Herons and egrets are widespread throughout the world. They mostly live near water and eat fish, frogs, snakes and small mammals. They are inventive in adapting their diet to local circumstance, and have a high bird IQ.
We saw six species of heron and egret, four of which are also found in Japan. If we had been concentrating on birds, and had taken more time to look, we might have found more, and taken better photographs.
The Grey Heron is a common bird around the world.
The Squacco Heron was seen in the distance in Amboseli on several occasions.
The Goliath Heron is the world's largest heron at 150cm tall.
