Kingfishers 3/3

Alcedinidae: Ceryle rudis

The Pied Kingfisher is about 24cm in length. It is common throughout Africa and southern Asia from Turkey eastwards. It fishes from a hover, and can eat in the air, unlike all other kingfishers, so it does not need to have a perch. It can also fish in seawater.

The male has two breast bands; the female, one.

This is the only kingfisher in the genus Ceryle, though there are four similar-looking ones in the genus Megaceryle.
