Lilac-breasted Roller

Coraciidae: Coracias caudatus

The name 'roller' refers to the flight pattern of the male at mating time. The Lilac-breasted Roller is about  35cm in length, and hunts from a perch for insects, lizards, smaller birds and other small animals at ground level.

This colourful bird was extremely common in the Maasai Mara, and was also seen at Nakuru.
