Little Bee-eater

Meropidae: Merops pusillus

This is the smallest species of bee-eater, at about 16cm in length. It eats insects, mainly bees, wasps and hornets, which it catches in the air. It returns to a perch, and beats the insect against something to remove the sting before eating it.

Males and females are alike. The duller specimen on the right in the main picture is a juvenile bird. These bird were seen at Namanga, near Amboseli.
