Montague's Harrier

Accipitridae: Circus pygargus

This migrant from the north is about 45cm in size. It eats anything alive that is of the right size - small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and large insects.

Montague's Harrier seemed to be fairly common in the Maasai Mara, since we saw a male, a female, and a juvenile on separate occasions.

The female looks like the female Pallid Harrier, but the brown circle around the eye is thinnner

The juvenile looks rather like an owl in this photograph. The face markings are similar to those on the female. These markings and the russet colour are absent in the adult male.
