Northern Anteater Chat

Turdidae or Muscicapidae: Myrmecocichla aethiops (Anteater Chat)

Turdidae or Muscicapidae: Myrmecocichla nigra (Sooty Chat)

The Northern Anteater Chat is about 20cm in length, and feeds on insects including ants and termites. The white patch on the primary feathers is evident in flight, but only sometimes visible in the bird at rest. These birds were seen at Nakuru.

The Sooty Chat is about 18cm in length. The male has a white shoulder patch, but the female is all brown. This picture was taken at Maasai Mara, where the Sooty Chat is said to be the common type.
