Nubian Woodpecker

Picidae: Campethera nubica (Nubian)

Picidae: Dendropicos namaquus (Bearded)

This is a very widespread woodpecker in Kenya. It is about 20cm in length, and lives on insects and grubs found under the bark of trees.

The barred, not spotted, pattern on the back of this bird (right), seen in the same place but on another day, together with the reduced size of the red cap at the rear of the head, suggest that it is the Bearded Woodpecker, another common species. Unfortunately, this was the only picture taken.

This woodpecker was seen in the garden of the lodge at Amboseli. Note the golden tail which is common to many species.
