Saddle-billed Stork
The Saddle-billed Stork can be up to 168cm. It generally feeds on fish, frogs and crabs, but also on young birds and small mammals.
Because of the back-lighting, I didn't realise what bird this was until I actually looked at the photograph later. The photograph was taken from a moving van, and was taken to capture the grouping of several species. The truly spectacular colouring of the bird cannot be fully appreciated in this crop from the larger photograph.
Ciconiidae: Ephippiorhyncus senegalensis (Saddle-billed)
Ciconiidae: Ciconia abdimii (Abdim's)
Abdim's Stork
This bird is thought to be Abdim's Stork after a process of elimination. Although the belly should be white, it is obscured. The bill is not distinctive enough for it to be the Open-billed Stork. The posture, shape and visible colour suggest the common Abdim's Stork, which reaches about 80cm.
