Tawny Eagle

Accipitridae: Aquila rapax

This is the most common eagle in Kenya.  it is about 70cm in length. It varies quite a lot in colouration. It is resident in Kenya, unlike the northern winter visitor, the Steppe Eagle, which it closely resembles. It scavenges, but will also kill small mammals. Despite the resemblance, these birds are not closely related.

In the Tawny Eagle, the gape, the yellow line back from the beak, only reaches the middle of the eye, while in the Steppe Eagle, it is prominent, and goes to the rear of the eye.
