Books 1A: Animals and Birds

Wildlife of East Africa by Martin Withers and Davis Hosking was the best book we found for the mammals and reptiles. It also has a small section on trees and other plants. Some guidebooks also have good animal sections, as the Insight Guide did. These animals are mostly large and unmistakeable if you have a reasonably good guide. Wildlife of East Africa also has an excellent selection of 200 or so birds. However, if you are really interested in birds, the book 'Birds of East Africa' by Dave Richards is lighter to carry around. It  contains about the same number of birds, but is truly excellent on the 'recognition points' that you need to tell one bird from another. Unfortunately, it seems to be out of print, but was available at many lodges in Kenya.

There are about 1100 species of bird in Kenya, and Withers & Hosking and Richards cover about 200 each. However, there will be some that are rarer than this, and also some that you think you recognise from these guides, but which turn out to be different.
