Maasai Giraffe 1/3

A very large Giraffe can be 5  metres to the top of the head, and weigh 1400kg. There are at least six sub-species, and in the area we visited, the Masai Giraffe, with a pattern having blotches with wavy edges, is the resident form. They are ruminants, have a tongue up to 45cm long and take leaves, flowers, shoots and pods mainly from acacia trees.

Giraffes need to drink every few days, and do not go very far from water. They move in groups, sometimes with as many as 30 members. There were Giraffes at Amboseli, but they were more common at Masai Mara.
