Nile Crocodile

Crocodiles can grow up to 6m. They are mainly active at night. Crocodiles could be seen in the Mara River on the Kenya-Tanzania border. However, these pictures were taken from inside the lodge at Maasai Mara. The crocodiles bask in the river all day, and come close to the lodge at 6pm when the kitchen staff feed them with unwanted bones, just a short drop from the lodge terrace.

The Crocodile's lower jaw is wider than the upper at the front, and the fourth tooth in the bottom jaw is visible, overlapping the upper jaw. This distinguishes Crocodiles from Alligators and Caimans. (There are only two extant species of Alligator - the American and the Chinese, and the Caimans reside in Central and South America. All others are Crocodiles.)
