Waterbuck

There are two sub-species, the Common Waterbuck, which was common in Amboseli, and the Defassa Waterbuck which we saw in Nakuru NP. They need water, and sometimes hide from predators in water. They eat grasses and small plants, and sometimes leaves of trees. The Defassa is overall more common, and seems to like rainier locations. The bottom marking tells them apart. It weighs about 200kg.

Common Waterbuck have a white circle with a black centre on the bottom, while the Defassa Waterbuck (above) lacks the black centre.

We saw the Common Waterbuck in Amboseli, and the Defassa in Nakuru.
