The elephant is a sufficiently unusual animal that it has  its own order, Proboscidea, and family, Elephantidae. The African Elephant has recently been split into two species, though some still disputethe need for this. The elephant of the savannah is the African Bush Elephant, or African Savannah Elephant, Loxodonta africana. The African Forest Elephant is smaller, and the Asian or Indian Elephant is the third extant member of this order.

Primates

We saw two primate species apart from ourselves, in Kenya. These were the Olive Baboon, Papio anubis, and the Vervet Monkey, Cercopithecus aethiops. These are members of the family Cercopithecidae (Old World monkeys).

(Recently, it has been argued that all varieties of baboon are sub-species of Papio hamdryas, and the Olive Baboon on this account would be Papio hamadryas anubis.)

(The Vervet Monkey has recently been put into a new genus, Chlorocebus with six species, although many refer to all six as Chlorocebus aethiops.)
