Hippopotamus 1/2

The Common Hippopotamus is about 1m50 at the shoulder and weighs between 1000kg and 3000kg. Due to rapid water loss through its unique skin, the hippopotamus remains mostly immersed in water during the day, and emerges to feed on grass at night. We saw hippos at Amboseli where they were feeding on the grass of the swamp in the daytime, and at the Mara River on the Kenya-Tanzania border where they were in the river waiting for dusk. Hippos tend to have fixed feeding areas, and create paths to them through regular use.

These pictures are at the Mara River.
